After 1 week of competition, the Berlin European Championships are finished, and France won 10 medals, 3 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze.
In the Combined events, the big disappointment came from Kévin MAYER, who gave up after the long jump, he fouled his 3 jumps. The other French athletes experienced the same trouble, with no jump. They pursued their decathlon anyway, and performed very well. Ruben GADO (7137 points) finished 16th, but he smashed his 400m record. Romain MARTIN (7032 points) finished 18th. After a decathlon full of surprises, Athur ABELE won the gold medal in front of his home crowd, with 8431 points, he was ahead of Russian’s Neutral Athlete Ilya SKURENYEV who scored 8321 points, the Belarus Vitali ZHUK got the bronze medal with 8290 points.
We witnessed a very tied heptathlon during this two days, great performances and some records, finally Nafissatou THIAM became European champion! She confirms her status as the heptathlon queen, after her Olympic gold in 2016 and World gold in 2017. With 6816 she was ahead of the british Katarina JOHNSON-THOMPSON who led the competition until the javelin throw. With 6759 she broke her personnel best. The third place went to the german Carolin SCHAFER with 6602 points. Our two French heptathletes, Esther TURPIN and Diane MARIE-HARDY, realized a good hepathlon. They broke several of their personal records (high jump and javelin for Esther, 100m hurdles, high jump and 800m for Diane.) Their results are very engaging for the future. They finished respectively 11th and 18th.

These performances promise us a beautiful Décastar, with athletes in very good shape! The startlist will be announced shortly.
